Since 1970 the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis has been assisting the Diocese of Ciudad Guayana in its mission to make fervent disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ among the peoples of this industrial city at the juncture of the Orinoco and Caroni Rivers in East Central Venezuela. Having served several different parishes in that time, we are working now with the people of the Parish of Jesucristo Resucitado (Risen Christ), a very large parish in one of the poorest areas of the city.
Our mission is the same as for those working in any other parish: helping people to know and live the Good News of Jesus Christ through Word, Sacrament, and Christian Charity. We rejoice to see God’s grace at work in the many good people of faith who live here. One of the special challenges of our ministry here, however, is the material poverty and related social problems from which many of the people suffer. Our hope, however, is in Christ and the victory of His Resurrection and the new life that comes to us from His love poured out for us in His Sacrifice upon the Cross.
We invite you to read this blog to learn more about our missionary efforts to help the Church grow and flourish here.
